At a Glance – Hong Kong Golf Club at Fanling

  • Hong Kong Golf Club, established in 1889, has been a fixture in professional golf for more than six decades

  • The Hong Kong Open is one of just three events in the history of golf to be played at the same venue for more than six decades

  • LIV Golf Hong Kong will utilize the same composite layout at Fanling that is used by the Hong Kong Open

  • The 288-yard par-4 fourth was the second easiest par-4 on the course and is drivable under soft conditions. It played to a stroke average of 3.759 but did not yield an eagle

  • The 13th and 17th holes share a large double green, leading to potentially long putts

  • The par-4 16th is a slight downhill dogleg right – and offers players a blind tee shot. A nice high fade is usually the proper play

  • One of the best viewing spots for onsite spectators is the green behind the third hole, with action on the 18th green and 4th tee box also within view

Course Info

For over 100 years, the Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling has been an icon of Asia’s World City, a magnet for amateurs and legends alike. In fact it’s the joint-oldest continuous tournament venue in the world, a record it shares with Augusta.

Now, LIV Golf is here to write a fresh chapter in this amazing history. Last year’s debut brought a record single-day crowd to Fanling, finishing in twin thrillers on the final day.

Whether you caught LIV Golf Hong Kong last year or you’re making your own debut this time, here’s everything to know as we begin the first Asian leg of our season.

What happened before we got here?

A lot! Hong Kong Golf Club can trace its history all the way back to 1889 and the current course was first laid in 1911. It’s been hosting the Hong Kong Open every year since 1959.

How does this course play?

Tight and tough. Fanling is one of the smallest courses in golf, so bomb and gouge (the golfers’ term for distance over accuracy) won’t cut it.

Who will it favor?

Being quite small, Hong Kong won’t necessarily favor LIV Golf’s big drivers.

What have the players said about the course?

“Everybody was extremely supportive. I felt like there was great energy on every hole.” -  Abe Ancer.

“It’s a smart person’s golf course.” - Cam Smith.

“There’s a lot of shot-shaping you have to do out here, and your iron play has to be on point.” - Bryson DeChambeau.
